As young adults we are busy dividing our time between work, family, friends, and parties. As college students, we add classes, studying, and exams to that list. If you are anything like me, you find yourself wishing for more days in the week, on a regular basis. We have all experienced those moments of sitting in class, but not being able to focus. Or sitting down to take a test and your mind just goes blank. Luckily, there are a host of foods that are designed to help you stay focused, alert, and awake. Below is a short list of natural foods that will super-charge your brain function by helping you stay focused, alert, think clearer, and stay awake. Compiled from WebMD and Dr. Axe, these foods are sure to jump-start your mind.

  1. WATER

Water gives the brain energy to perform all of its functions, including thought and memory processes. According to Dr. Corinne Allen, founder of the Advanced Learning and Development Institute, brain cells need two-time more energy than other cells in the body. Water provide this energy more efficiently than any other substance.

  1. BLUEBERRIES

The antioxidants in blueberries stimulate the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain, which boosts concentration and memory.

They also contain antioxidants that boost focus and protect against cancer, heart disease and dementia, claims Dr. Jeremy Spencer of Reading University. His studies found that people could use blueberries and other fruit rich in antioxidants, such as grapes, to improve their chances during exams, or on long, difficult days at work.

  1. GREEN TEA

Green tea helps you focus because of two ingredients: caffeine and L’theanine. Caffeine stimulates the mind and body, while L’theanine stimulates alpha brain activity.

Jane Bryant’s studies suggests that the ‘combination’ of both ingredients at low doses, provides a better ability to focus attention, with improvement of both speed and accuracy.

  1. LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES

Leafy green vegetables are full of antioxidants and carotenoids, which boosts and helps protect your brain. They are also full of B-vitamins, which helps your memory, focus, along with the brain’s health and power. Leafy green vegetables also contain folic acid, which improves your mental clarity.

Martha Clara Morris, Sc.D. for community research at Rush University Medical Center, and leader of the research team, conducted studies found an association with vitamin K, lutein, and cognitive abilities.

  1. FATTY FISH

Fatty/oily fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, which aid memory, mental performance, and behavioral functions.

People that are deficient in omega-3 are more likely to have poor memory, mood swings, depression, and fatigue, according to a study at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Oily fish containing omega-3 fatty acids include tuna, mackerel, salmon, trout, and halibut.

So if you find yourself feeling a little sluggish, worn out, or mentally drained,  go ahead and energize your brain with a big glass of water or a handful of blueberries!
