Opening weekend for Thor Ragnarok garnered about $121 million in domestic revenue and over $427 million world-wide! Needless to say, the numbers are showing that the God of Thunder is quickly gaining it’s success through the box office. The 17th film in the MCU and 3rd installment to the Thor story line, Thor: Ragnarok picks up 2 years after The Avengers: Age of Ultron and much has changed since. Hulk (Bruce Banner who is played by Mark Ruffalo) is trapped on an alien planet, Loki and Thor discover they have an older evil sister named Hela, and discovering this ultimately leads to the destruction and demise of their home planet. It’s the Asgardian Apocalypse! Despite the end of their beloved home, the film does not fall short of comedic relief and intergalactic shenanigans.
The film introduces a variety of likable supporting characters which helped promote a comfortable pacing for the storyline. One of the most important aspects of a film for me is effective pacing and if it does not maintain my attention, I will either walk out or fall asleep. Thankfully this one does not make me feel this way. Even if you’re not a fan of Thor, I guarantee you will still enjoy the film. Dr. Strange even makes a surprise appearance! Let’s not forget Stan Lee’s famed cameos in all of the Marvel movies (I swear his brief appearances get funnier and funnier).
The producers definitely changed the atmosphere of what we are normally used to seeing with Thor and all the characters associated. There’s more comedy and has an 80s nostalgia vibe throughout which is an odd change from what we are normally used to from the previous Thor movies. The tone in the first two movies are more serious compared to Ragnarok but it is not an unwelcome change. Thor and Hulk exhibit more of a friendship and it develops over the course of the film. The viewer gets to see Hulk’s character more than we’re used and it’s cool to see. Overall, the movie was enjoyable and highly recommended.
The Avengers: Infinity War release is coming May 4th, 2018 with only one more Marvel movie (Black Panther) to release until the ultimate showdown. I think I can speak for all Marvel and Non-Marvel fans when I say excitement is an understatement!
