Gulf County Fire
As much as no one likes to think about things like this – they do happen. Right now is an ample time for wild fires to occur. We have not had any rain recently in order to keep the drought down. It’s something to keep in mind but also something to better prepare for in the future.
In no more than 24 hours, a wild fire started in the panhandle and is now this year’s largest fire in Northwest Florida. As of now, no injuries have been reported but locals and tourists are alarmed by the smoke being seen along the roads. A wildfire smoke advisory is in issue for Gulf County and residents of Overstreet.
“The fire started from something small, we don’t have any authorizations that can pin point where this fire actually started from at this time.” says Public Information Officer Hannah Bowers.
Fire departments including the city of Wewahitchka, Overstreet, and Port St. Joe Beach are ready to help when needed to contain this fire. As of Wednesday, March 28th, the fire is contained at least 20%. On Thursday, March 29th, 25% of the fire is contained. It has destroyed more than 8,000 acres. Thankfully, no homes or buildings are in the path of the fire.
Callaway Fire
While assisting the fire in Gulf County, officials were notified that there has been another wildfire spotted in Bay County. The second fire started on Thursday in Callaway. The fire is on Allanton Road and Highway 22 and has consumed at least seven acres. No word has come out if the fire will be contained anytime soon.
