A Bittersweet Moment
What was supposed to be an amazing run in Grand Finals of a gaming championship seemed to end on a less than sweet moment for one contender. For one player it raises a safety issue at events still, and others have made it the next meme in the Super Smash Bros. Melee community.
On Sunday, April 21 Pound 2019 in Laurel, Michigan was wrapping up a weekend of Smash Bros. tournaments. Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma of Orlando, FL was at the event and looking to win another major tournament. The game being played was Super Smash Bros. Melee for Gamecube, a fighting game from Nintendo that was released over 10 years ago. Making it into Top 12, he was bested by Joseph “Mango” Marquez in Winner Semi-Finals, bringing Juan to Loser’s Side. Having to fight back, Juan got into the Grand Finals and would need to win two Best-of-Five sets. His opponent, was Joseph.
