College can be overwhelming and boring all at the same time.  You are probably wondering how that can be true.  Well, wonder no more as I am about to tell you.

When starting school, we get buried under assignments pretty quick.  We have due dates and think every professor is out to get us.  You kind of get the feeling they believe one thing:  they are the only one we have to worry about.

So… What happens?  You get overwhelmed.  It’s ok.  It has happened to the best of us.  On the bright side, I am still here to talk to you about it. So…  There is hope for you!

The reality is it will get easier.  You will find your assignment groove.  That said, you will eventually get bored.  This is where the fun begins.

On campus there are many things you can do to fight the boredom!  I can hear you asking “like what?”  You can check out the college website and find out about the clubs there.

Yet another option is to head to Student Union East.  Visit the Student Government Association (SGA) office.  You can find someone there (during usual campus hours) who can help.

But Wait!  There’s more…  There are even more options.  Some of these clubs you can find out about from your program advisor.  I have both been a part of the Tiger Team and Commodore Productions.  I found out about both through friends and my advisors.

The point is, get involved and fight the boredom.  I say this because there are so many opportunities to have fun and to network.

The word network.  Such an important word.  The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines network as “a usually informally interconnected group or association of persons (such as friends or professional colleagues).”

Ok, so there is a slight ulterior motive here.  There is a priceless opportunity to meet people and make friends.  Also, there is an opportunity to meet people who “know” people.

You will eventually graduate and you will want a job.  What better way to gain experience, or that foot in the door than to network?

So, you can go to school, have fun, do something you enjoy, and even get a chance to get good at it.  You just have to be willing to get involved.

My production experiences with Commodore Productions have been amazing!  I have met some really cool people, and I have added to my skill set.

My time spent as a Student Assistant has also helped me get web design experience that I need.  In fact, I have already had several paid jobs that I have or am working on now.

These opportunities arose because I got in there and got busy.  I got busy on my schoolwork, getting involved, and meeting new and interesting people.

Check out this video if you are a Freshman or know someone who would benefit (whether here at GCSC or a university) :
