GCSC Students Put on GODSPELL
The students at the Visual and Performing Arts at Gulf Coast State College have done it again. Students and faculty put together a wonderful performance of Godspell. Consequently, this musical will captivate audience members with delightful dancing, singing, and live music.
For those who are not familiar with the play, Godspell is a proclamation story with a modern twist. It is the retelling of the gospel, centered around the parables of Jesus. Primarily from the book of Matthew.
The musical premiered for the first time in 1971 and it was composed by Stephen Schwartz and written by John-Michael Tebelak. The play was originally produced on the New York Stage by Edgar Lansbury, Stuart Duncan, and Joseph Beruh.
Behind the Scenes…
Audience members will be enthralled by a dynamic set that contains work tables, tin bins, and sky-high scaffolding. The set includes lighting techniques that move with every step the cast makes. Lighting is key to any show and Godspell will surely excite every person watching.
Everything demands your attention, but nothing pulls away from the story.
The crew included about 20 people, and they all ranging from technicians to designers.
Director, Hank Rion, asked for nothing but perfection from this dynamic cast and crew. Cullen Heuman will play Jesus, while Christian Sullivan takes on the sinister character, Judas. The cast of ten include talents by:
- Andrew Rowell
- Michael Anthony Butler
- Tyler Kent, Mia Salaveria
- Amy Tinch
- Suzanne Nelson
- Morgan Hamby
- Susanna Lloyd
Each of the actors will be played by themselves. Which is one less thing to memorize!
What is most noteworthy, after reviewing some of the play, one thing is clear. The actors and actresses have a connection with one another. The dynamic cast of 10 tells the story of loss and triumph in a way that enchants the audience from beginning to end.
Behind the music…
Godspell is going to be performed by a live band! This will excite any audience member who is musically inclined. Gulf Coast State College instructor, John Divine, directs the 4 piece band. The members of this talented group include Jim Nichols, Carissa Hosea, Mariah Brown, and Eric Krebs.
The music bends and flows with the entire production. Making you tap your toes before you know it. When asked what their favorite song was, actress, Susanna Lloyd’s pick was Beautiful City. “The song has a somber moment of saying goodbye…it’s the mission after he is gone,” Susanna also added that in the play she just wanted to give Cullen, who plays Jesus, a hug.
Furthermore, Godspell will be a delight for all audience members. Don’t miss out on seeing this amazing musical with an even more amazing cast and crew!
