Panama City, FL – As part of its observance of Veterans Day, Gulf Coast State College is hosting the Panama City premiere screening of Finding Sconiers, a documentary about the recovery of one of Northwest Florida’s fallen, Lt. Edwart T. Sconiers.
Sconiers, a native of DeFuniak Springs, served as a bombardier on the Johnny Reb, Jr. that was shot down and captured on October 21, 1942. He was held in Stalag Luft III, the German prison camp made famous by the movie The Great Escape. He mysteriously died there and was missing until his grave was found August 21, 2015. He also received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism during WWII.
The documentary focuses on Pamela Sconiers Whitelock, Dean Emeritus of Gulf Coast State College, and her involvement in her uncle’s unfinished story, the formidable challenges faced with finding him and the remarkable homecoming on January 25, 2018. The film was created by Jennifer Holton and Ky Sisson and won “Outstanding Documentary” at the 2019 WWII Film Festival in Normandy, France.
The screening of Finding Sconiers will be held on Sunday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the Sarzin Lecture Hall in the Language & Literature Building at the Panama City Campus. The event is free and open to the community.
