Creative people are some of the most beautiful people out there. They can come up with something so beautiful at the drop of a hat and then say it was only a passing thought! But did you know some of the greatest and most creative people had mental health issues? For example, Vincent van Gogh suffered from not just epilepsy, but Bipolar Disorder as well. He is quoted saying “My only anxiety is, how can I be of use in the world”.
Speaking from experience (at least as far as Bipolar disorder goes), that is the main question I would say a lot of people with mental health issues ask themselves. How can you live with such a painful chain around your mind? How can you help others when you feel as though you can’t even help yourself?
I promise I am going somewhere with this.
If you have Bipolar disorder, you know how hard it is to do anything and I do mean ANYTHING. You don’t want to do what you used to, like being around friends or family, reading, or watching your favorite movie. And that’s only the depression side. Whenever you are manic, you still don’t want to do anything. At least, anything good and helpful for your future. However, I know there is one thing that has always helped me feel better and helps me put my energy some place positive whether I am in a high or a low. That is indulging in my creative side.
When you need to focus on something, try developing your very own webpage! That counts as being creative and takes a ton of focus! When you feel like being in a dark room by yourself and moping, get an old-fashioned camera and use a dark room and you will start to feel so much better because you are accomplishing something.
When you feel alone, go to the Center for Student Media and hang out with everyone. They are sure to make you laugh and encourage you when you don’t feel at your best (especially if you lack confidence, like me, and think every step you take is wrong). When you need to talk to someone, you will find a good friend in Dr. Erika Goines.
The point of this article is to get people to think about using creativity to help themselves. Creativity serves more than just one purpose. It can enlighten more than just the person who sees it, but also the person who is creating it. The Center for Student Media has taught me so much and have been so willing to help me, even though I was absolutely positive I could do it on my own (I couldn’t).
If you are hurting, it’s okay. Paint it out or shoot a video about your struggles and if you don’t know how, go to the Center for Student Media and they will show and teach you. Do SOMETHING! Just don’t stay in the pit of hopelessness. Be creative for more than just a career. Be creative for a healthy life, mind, and self.
