WKGC, the public radio station at Gulf Coast State College has a skeleton crew of a staff. That leaves a lot of work to a few people. Enter Angela Small, one of two part-time production assistants for the station. She writes and produces the Community Campus connection, puts together the afternoon news and weather, and tracks 2 three-hour weekend shows; Smooth Jazz Saturdays and Urban AC. Tom, one of WKGC’s volunteers has described her voice as “ethnic and articulate”. In a business where all you have is how people hear you, Angela stands out in a positive and unique way. All of Angela’s life experiences and cultural connections make her delivery on both air shifts feel genuine. But rarely is someone every only their profession, so who is she outside of the station and else does she do?

Angela is originally from Detroit, Michigan and moved down to Panama City, Florida about twelve years ago. She is a mother of four daughters and seven grandchildren. Angela is also a student at Gulf Coast State College and was inspired by one of her daughters to enroll. While not focused on gaining skills to gain a job in the industry, she does enjoy learning and exploring the different skills and parts of the digital media field as it has expanded since the days when she first got involved with the internet and web page construction back when dial-up was standard.

Here’s a clip of her describing how and why she went back to school.

When Angela finishes her B.A.S. in digital media, she wants to take all of her skills and be an a media entrepreneur. With seven grandchildren she jokes about endless content to pull from and wants to pass her knowledge down to them. Angela Small is a mother, a local radio deejay, and soon-to-be media mogul.
