In an array of clubs and organizations on campus, there is one that stands out: Commodore Productions–a multi-media producing, student-led organization that focuses on developing content for Gulf Coast State College, the community, and Digital Media students as learning opportunities. Commodore Productions is under the umbrella of the “Center for Student Media” which also covers the Alternation–the student-led radio station. While the organization consists of mostly students within the Digital Media programs, it is open for everyone regardless of experience or background. There are many clubs and organizations on campus, so why join Commodore Productions in particular?

Engaging environment and hands-on.

There are often two different reasons when joining a campus club or organization. What are those reasons? Finding like-minded people and/or developing one’s skills and abilities. Having a combination of both is a score! Much of Commodore Productions daily tasks are very hands-on, so improving one’s skills is bound to occur. From learning to operate cameras, filming schedules and opportunities nearly every day, live event broadcasting, and post-production, there is something for everyone. For live events, they produce live athletic games and visual and performing arts shows. If live production is not one’s thing, then filming campus events such as Super Saturday, College Night, and SGA events are available to record too! Even if someone has just a small interest in multimedia production there are many other students that feel the same; building off each other’s strengths is how lasting friendships happen.

Resumé, resumé, resumé!

One thing people often may not think to put on their resumé is their extracurricular activities; this is especially important when still early in one’s career. Employers love to see how one has learned how to work within a team–which in digital media is immensely important–and how one has learned to work independently. Commodore Productions is all about expanding one’s skills, and even if one is not going directly into the field of video production, the experience and training can benefit and apply to many different careers.
