This pandemic has everyone, students, teachers bored out of their mind or off their game from their time in isolation. I was lucky enough to find another student who could spend their time doing something enjoyable during the quarantine. A student getting their AS degree here at gulf coast state college, Nick Allen, enjoyably spent his quarantine camping.
He spent about a month camping at different spots in the woods. When speaking with Nick, I asked him what the most memorable moment of his time camping was. Nick looked at me for a moment and said, “ there are many, but the thing I remember most is when we were on our first camping trip and had to hike five miles to the campgrounds. Usually, that’s not a problem, but we had a giant cooler packed to the brim with food and drinks. It was brutal. I was sweating and hot. It felt as if I was dying. Halfway there, a lady on an ATV stopped and told us we would never make it at this rate and offered to take the cooler.
But other than that, it was fun since I wasn’t stuck at home like other people. Nick came across different animals such as deer, squirrels. He even got a glance at a bear, moving through the woods. Other than the horrible moment, it was a great time since we got to go fishing, hiking, and rock climbing. I look forward to going back”.
Nick talked for a bit longer about what he would have done if he stayed home rather than go camping. He said, “short and simple video games and sleeping no more, no less.” I thanked Nick and ended it there. It’s nice to hear about things some of us missed out on while stuck at home.
