Gulf Coast SGA: The Students Matter
by Tony Marks, published on September 25, 2020
At Gulf Coast State College, the Student Government Association (SGA) offers students the opportunity to have their voices heard. Gulf Coast SGA seeks to get students involved in all aspects of campus life. For SGA, the students matter!
The Mission of Gulf Coast SGA
Led by a board of Gulf Coast students, SGA speaks directly to the college’s administration and Board of Trustees, acting as a liaison for the student body. In their mission, SGA voices the students’ opinions and concerns, and they also provide them with fun activities and educational events. Members of this organization approve new campus clubs, plan activities on and off campus, and encourage fellow GCSC students to get involved in the community. SGA’s Facebook page features much of the organization’s recent activities.
Events and Activities Sponsored by SGA
SGA offers many different activities for all students at GCSC. The organization sponsors co-curricular activities such as community service and civic engagement conferences. Last Tuesday, students and employees came together in the cafeteria to read the US Constitution. Education, however, is not SGA’s only intention; they want students to have fun, after all! There are many exciting events and activities that SGA sponsors such as free movies, free food, and free goodies. Any future events by SGA are posted in the Events Calendar.

The Gulf Coast SGA Board
Four students, elected by last year’s student body, lead SGA. These four students serve as President, Vice President, Parliamentarian, and Secretary, but they don’t act alone. Students from other clubs and organizations around campus also play their part. These students represent SGA while at-large members represent GCSC’s student body. While the SGA Board sponsors events and activities for the students, they plan to improve campus life and student involvement.
Sign-up Available
Despite the safety precautions at GCSC to limit the spread of COVID-19, SGA still offers students with a GPA of 2.0 a place in the organization. Advisors will be ready to guide new members and mentor them in the basics of SGA. New members will also be alerted to upcoming events and activities. For any student wishing to join, applications are available outside of the SGA office located in the Student Union East Cafeteria.
