Commodore Productions—Gulf Coast State College’s video production student organization—wrapped up their final broadcast of “War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast” last Sunday on the 1st of November. The show’s opening day was Friday, October 23rd and continued through the weekend of both Saturday and Sunday. This occurred the week of Halloween as well.

“War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast”

was put on the Visual and Performing Arts department at Gulf Coast State College. Both students and faculty were a part of the show. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic though, there was no audience permitted and the show was live-streamed online. Thus, Commodore Productions handled the technical side of the broadcast. The show was broadcasted from the Advanced Technology Center’s studio where all the remote camera, audio, and production work took place. The location of the show was held in the Amelia Center building which is across campus from the ATC; naturally, quite a few runs had to be made across campus to ensure the robot cameras and the audio was coming into the studio smoothly without any hiccups. These types of remote shows and events are not that uncommon for Commodore Productions and are done quite often.

One may ask why the show was not simply recorded for the first night and thereafter streamed for every following show night. Well, it prevents the students from gaining the hands-on experience they need—both performing arts students and digital media students alike. Broadcasting each night allowed the performers to gain experience with performing and digital media students to learn the ways of the studio operations. Gulf Coast State College is all about the hands-on experience for students, after all.
