Being a student assistant does have its positives and negatives.

The positives are:

  • Flexibility
  • Experience
  • Knowing what the career field may be like

Where its negatives from what I have experienced:

  • Harder to find resources outside of campus
  • Pays bare minimum

As a student assistant in the Digital Media program, I see more of the positives rather than some of the negatives while working on campus.

Experience and Flexibility

When it comes to a flexible job, people at Gulf Coast State College can hire student assistants. The reason why flexibility is important for the students themselves, is so that they can focus on their studies as well as earning extra income. Advisors and supervisors understand the struggles college students face when it comes to juggling a part-time or full-time job with assignments.

Experience is a big deal when it comes to having a career in the field you’ve studied for. Employers would prefer people with prior experience. Having experience may not only mean you’re more than likely to get hired, but it shows the employer you have prior knowledge and experience. This looks better when looking for a new position.

At Gulf Coast, supervisors and advisors help give you the experience you need for future jobs. Gaining experience as a student gives you an idea of what a specific career field is like.

Personal Learning Aspects

Coming from a personal perspective, I have received hands-on training from the college to help improve my work position. Such as attending events and doing a weekly radio show. Some of the learning aspects I have gained include:

  • Audio hookup
  • Camera positionings
  • Radio show voice modulation
  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Live production events

Having a work-study position is a great hands-on experience for students. While listening to a lecture in class will help you to obtain a good degree, a work-study position will help you have an idea of what it’s like in the real world. Work-Study helps to open your eyes to different real-world opportunities. The value of the work-study program lies within the experience you gain instead of the monetary value received.
