Well it’s the end of the school year and if you’re probably dealing with a mountain of final projects/exams, signing up for new classes, filing for taxes possibly for the first time, and other adulting activities that aren’t any easier during a pandemic that keeps many places closed still. But take a deep breath because you can get through this!

Dealing with School First

A big issue many students face is the abuse of their employer on their time. Many students have very unfavorable schedules because they had to be hours that wouldn’t interfere with the classes. That is nice and all but if the hours you do work leave no time for sleep and homework it’s ultimately pointless.

Your job might feel like it is everything. But at the end of the day, the grocery store can find someone else to cover your spot if you need time off for exams. You can’t let them push you around and they will try if you let them. One time I closed at 11 pm and then they had me open at 5 am the next day. If I had school work due at the time it just wouldn’t have gotten done. Make it clear to your employer that while you appreciate the opportunity to work, as a student your school is more important and you can’t work every hour you aren’t at school or asleep. It is a good idea to schedule a few days off before big projects are due or before exams. This will save you the last-minute stress.

Set a schedule on those days to start in the morning. It can be easy to let time get away from you. Big projects require a lot of time commitment so you can’t do it at the last minute. Divide the project into parts and set time goals you think you can reach. This will help you stay focused and get that work done.

Get Those Classes Early

Make sure to schedule your classes early so that you can get the ones you want. If you aren’t sure what to take or the options are a little too much for you. There are options. If you are in a general education program there are plenty of school counselors you can schedule time with. If you are in a more specialized program you can get more detailed help. Find out who is in charge of your program and send them an email. They will be happy to meet with you and discuss your options. They are there to help. Whichever you’re able to work with they can help schedule your classes.

Dealing with Taxes

Honestly dealing with your taxes is very intimidating. Especially for someone who hasn’t done it before. If all you are handling is school and a job it is actually quite simple though. You can use one of many free tax programs. Some are provided by the government. All you have to do is follow the onscreen directions and enter a few numbers from your w4 and a tax document provided by the college. Unfortunately, if you have been investing money it can get a little more complicated so I would recommend a tax expert or an older family member for help. Government Tax Help
