Diving In

Looking for something new to help expand your creative thinking? Then Drawing I (Art 1200C 0) is for you! This course explores different ink techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and contour drawing. It also allows students the opportunity to create still life pieces from everyday objects! To find out more about Drawing I (Art 1200C 0), Anna Parsons, a freshman at Gulf Coast who is currently enrolled in the course, has been interviewed by Brittany Parsons to learn out more about the course and her experience so far.

The Interview

What has been your favorite thing about class so far? Why?

So far, I really like the professor, Mrs. Marinuzzi. She can be very funny at times, is very cool with her students. She even plays music during class.

Would you recommend the class to other students?

Yes, I would recommend this class to other students. Tammy really pushes her students to work hard and do their best. She really wants her students to succeed.

Do you think people who have no experience in art would be able to take this class?

Yes, while it would definitely be easier if you already had some skill in art, newbies would still be able to learn a lot from it and would just need to push themselves a bit more.

What have you learned about in class so far?

In class we have learned about contour drawing. Contour drawing is just using a straight pen with nice smooth lines. It has no shading and I think it’s a really great technique that I tend to use quiet often.

What projects have you done? What was the medium? What was your thought process? Would you change anything about it? Why?

“The Stump” by Anna Parsons

This project is called “The Stump.” It is a project surrounding contour drawing. My medium was using paper and an ink pen and, of course, a pencil to sketch it out first. The contour drawing technique uses a straight pen and creating nice smooth lines to give the piece a crisp fresh look. My thought process while making this was first coming up with what I wanted to draw. It took me a little bit to figure it out, but I finally decided on a tree stump. The reason behind a tree stump is just because of the nice barky textures it provides. I wouldn’t change anything about the final product. I am very proud and happy with how it turned out!

I called this project “Mixed Kettle.” This project was also based around contour drawing and still life! I used the same medium as my last piece of artwork. (paper, sketch pencil, ink pen) My thought process behind finding what to draw was easy since this was provided to us by our professor. I got to choose how I wanted to set it up so, I decided to put the kettle pot closer because I thought it would stand out more in the piece and be the point of attention. For the technique, I thickened my lines in certain areas to make them pop and used contour. The only thing I would change about my drawing would be the mess-ups in my line work. At some points, I would overlap lines that shouldn’t be overlapping, or the pen would bleed too much. Even with the little errors, I still loved how it turned out, and I am proud of myself!
