This week I had the opportunity to sit down with the assistant coaches for both Gulf Coast basketball teams to discuss how their seasons have started. Both teams so far are doing well with on two losses each. The men’s team suffered losses to Central Georgia Tech and Polk State. The woman’s team took losses to Eastern Florida in their season opener and to Shelton State last Sunday.
Gulf Coast Woman’s Basketball
Assistant Coach, Chris Godfrey, explained this was a great start to their season considering their starting point. Only two weeks before school started, him and Coach Kuhn took over with only two players on the roster. Right now they are still trying to find their right group of girls to keep on the court and that play best together. He also mentioned that the non-conference schedule is a time for making positive strides and has him looking forward to how the season will progress. The woman’s basketball team has not had any home games so far and Coach Godfrey said this might be an advantage for them. He said “it’s not ideal to spend so much time on the road, but they are becoming closer by spending a lot of time together and bonding.” The team has also added two new players. Peyton Gray played in her first two games this past weekend. She is a transfer from Cal State North Ridge. They will also be adding another transfer that will be eligible to play after Christmas break.
Injuries
Injuries- Anaya Boyd has a sprained ankle. She is a transfer from Georgia Tech, that played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Godfrey said she brings a lot of experience to the court and is poised with a calming attitude. They were missing her in their last game, but hope will be back soon.
Men’s Basketball
Scott Jackson, the assistant for the men’s basketball team said their season was progressing really well. He expects the team to be much better as they move into conference. The men’s team has not had many home games but in their next 6 games, 4 will be at home. Alex Matthews will be joining the team after Christmas break. He is a transfer from Evansville. He is a 6’5, guard/forward; Jackson referred to him as a “potential starter” and a good leader. He has been practicing with the team, but ineligible due to an academic transfer situation.
Injuries
Goodnews Kpegeol has been suffering from a foot injury non-related to basketball. He visits with doctors this week and must wait for a release from doctors to return to play.
