How I chose my major
I have always been interested in art growing up. I started drawing when I was fourteen and always took art classes in high school. The creative field felt as if it was calling to me. When I came to the advising office at Gulf Coast State College, I was pleasantly surprised.
They told me about their digital media production program and I loved what I heard. I would take classes on video production, graphic design, website development, and so much more. The entire list of classes excited me, so I knew this was the right choice for me.
I have been to two different colleges before moving to Panama City with my family and discovering GCSC. First, I went to the University of Arkansas, for one semester. It was so crowded that I had over 300 students in all of my classes. The campus was so huge it took me thirty minutes to get from one classroom to the next, with only fifteen minutes between them.
University life just was not for me, as I felt washed away in the sea of students and far away from any professor. The environment just wasn’t right, and the other students just seemed interested in sorority or frat house life. That wasn’t interesting to me.
University Life
Finally a good fit
Now, being here in Gulf Coast State College, I am the happiest I have ever been with my college experience. The professors are all so nice and knowledgeable that it makes it a warm environment to learn in. The students are all great people with different interests and unique personalities that it makes it exciting to come to class just to see how the day will go and what jokes are made throughout class.
The best part, though, is the work to me. I think this course has opened a new world for me and taught me things that I didn’t know I would love to do. I have a new passion for filming and digital production that fuels me in my studies and the commonality I find with my fellow students is apparent. We all have different parts that we like better, but everyone enjoys learning the ways of digital production.
Digital Media Dreams
This semester, I am taking a journalism class. I will write about the ups and downs of my experience here. Gulf Coast State College has been the best college experience for me but I do wish I had done more on campus. I plan to write about my ups and downs, the good and the bad of my time here, and what I learned from it all. Hopefully, this will comfort others as it is a struggle for anyone to pursue their dreams and go through this crazy college experience, but it is worth it.
