Branching Out On Campus
It was my last semester at Gulf Coast before I graduated with an A.S. degree when I realized I had barely explored the opportunities and events on campus. That semester, I set a goal for myself to get involved in more campus activities and events. I decided to fulfill a childhood dream of mine by entering the beauty pageant. In addition, I saw a post notifying the student body that a group of students wanted to participate in a video competition this year.
The Beauty Pageant Experience
The pageant had two rehearsals before the actual day, and I was only able to attend the first rehearsal. The people who were involved made the practice very fun and easy to understand, so the nerves did not kick in for me until the morning of the pageant. On the day, I had a lot to do beforehand, so I couldn’t do my hair as well as I had wanted. I was so nervous that I forgot the layout of the building and almost missed my spot. Then I forgot my words as I said my introduction piece during the pageant. With all this chaos and turmoil going on, it was still such an exciting experience. The fellow competitors were really nice people and everyone was dressed up so well I almost didn’t recognize a few classmates! I am so glad I was able to experience the adrenaline of a competition like this, even if I didn’t place.
Night Owl Student Production
Our student group called itself “Night Owl Production” and we came together to plan the production. We had so much fun, and so many of our students took part in it. I believe this was the most intricate piece I have ever worked on during my college career. There was always one person on a boomstick, two people on camera at all times, actors and actresses, and even a whole team of editors ready to work. Sadly, our main director ended up with a broken wrist, so the script could not be fully realized. Regardless of the outcome of the video, everyone involved was excited about working on it and it really brought us together.
