The Alternation
Dana Erskine runs the Alternation, a student-run radio station. She is a mentor to the DJs and takes on many responsibilities such as teaching, producing, and hosting, among other tasks. She’s been in this position for over a year and has learned a lot. For students wanting to break into radio, she suggests, “Find something you enjoy talking about and make a show. Whether that be a specific genre of music you enjoy, specific hobbies, or even if you enjoy talking to people.” Dana knows from personal experience that mistakes are inevitable, but don’t let them stop you from pursuing your passion. She regards talking and conducting interviews as the toughest part of her job. As a natural introvert, she finds it difficult to lead the conversation with guests. However, with each show, it gets easier to initiate a good back and forth. She has also learned that it helps to have your talking points and questions ready and rehearsed.
Memorable Encounters
Dana didn’t always plan to go into the radio field, but she has found a great appreciation and love for the radio field. Now she is a co-host, along with Jordan Caleb on “The Mix,” a radio show where they play and interview local musicians in Bay County and the surrounding regions. Dana has had many notable encounters as a radio host, but there is one she holds close to her heart. While hosting “The Mix,” She met Joseph Brooks. She recalls that he wrote and sang a song dedicated to his grandmother, who had passed away a few years back. As her grandmother had also passed away, the song resonated with her. She recounts it as “A sweet reminder of the people that make impacts in our lives.” This is one of the experiences you can only get in the production field.
A Positive Attitude
Despite the challenges that come with being a student and working a full-time job, Dana manages to stay positive around her students and classmates. When asked how she stays positive, she states, “I would be lying if I said I was positive all the time. I have days when I am not in the mood to talk or be around people, but I never want people around me to feel unloved. Everybody has their faults, but everyone deserves love and grace.” Her attitude is often regarded as infectious and keeps the spirit of her classmates and the DJs high.
Advice to Young Dana
For new students, she advises getting immersed into college life. Learn about clubs and go to events to meet other students. Don’t be afraid to talk to people and find out what GCSC offers. The advice she would give her younger self rings true to plenty of students. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Making a mistake is not the end of the world and does not define who you are or will become. She stresses the importance of relying on your loved ones and keeping the mindset that everything will be okay. A sentiment that many of us would tell our younger selves as well.
