For this week in Gaming, we are going to be taking a closer look at a very popular genre Rougelikes. What exactly is a roguelike some of you may be asking? Roguelikes are a sub-genre of RPGs in which the games are characterized by procedurally generated levels and permanent death of the player with every death bringing about game progression through unlocks and skill trees that make each run different and exciting. I’m here to shed some light on a few hidden gems of the Roguelike genre.
Peglin
Peglin by Red Nexus Games Inc. is a roguelike pachinko style game where you play as a goblin on a journey to the dragon’s lair to stop their evil tyranny. Battling enemies within the world of Peglin is unique in the sense that the combat is decided through Pachinko style gameplay that will have you tossing orbs down a Pachinko board hitting pegs accumulating damage to be hurled at the enemy. As you progress through the game you receive different types of orbs that you can upgrade and enhance to make every run new and different. As well as relics that provide a vast range of abilities that also change the game at a moment’s notice.
Gunfire Reborn
Gunfire Reborn by Duoyi Games is an FPS Rogue-lite that gives the player a selection of unique playable characters that each have unique and interesting abilities and playstyles. Players can play solo or co-op with up to three other players with the option of online matchmaking. Through the combination of online matchmaking, many different heroes to choose from, a unique art style, and more than 100 different items and weapons to use this game will provide many hours of gaming enjoyment.
Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate
Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate by PUNKCAKE Délicieux is a very interesting twist on chess which incorporates Strategy Roguelike elements. The setting is that of a Chess board but instead of having your normal units such as pawns, bishops, knights, etc.. you play as the King wielding his Royal shotgun because the rest of your kingdom has deserted to the opposing kingdom. Gameplay is unique as you move across the board as a normal chess piece would but with the ability to blast opposing pieces away with your trusty shotgun. With these game mechanics and movement of chess with other aspects of strategy roguelikes this game becomes a very fun and addictive game to play.
