Just recently, on December 8th the Game Awards were hosted to review the last year of games and shed light on some of the highlights. The Game Awards is an event that is hosted annually to celebrate and remember achievements reached in video games the past year. This doesn’t just include things like which game was the most fun, but also categories for things such as which game was the most available to people with disabilities, impressive music scores that accompany games, and much more. This years game awards featured 31 different categories. Of course, we aren’t going over each event, just the highlights for this article.
What’s Interesting?
Many of the categories that viewers are interested in are things like Best Narrative or music. As well as the main attraction, the Game of the Year. Unfortunately for this type of award ceremony it tends to be the same few outstanding games repeated over and over again due to a few factors raising them above others, which is why they also add smaller awards for categories like indie company games.
This didn’t completely stop the same games getting nominated and awarded however, the game that won game of the year was awarded 4 different awards, while the game with the most awards, God of War Ragnorok had 6. A third of all the awards available split between just two games. The following are some of the highlights from the other awards available.
Popular choices
- The Award for Players Choice is Genshin Impact.
- Best Indie Game was given to Stray.
- Best community and ongoing game was given to Final Fantasy.
- Best Multiplayer Game awarded to Splatoon 3.
Video Game Adaptations
Interestingly there is an award for adaptions of video games. Mostly in the form of TV shows and Movies. This year had a lot of great adaptations, like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Cyberpunk Edge runners and Arcane. This goes to show that while the game awards are centered around games themselves, its a celebration of the whole culture. This includes content creators for games, like youtubers or other influencers. Whose personality helps give face to the game awards as a whole.
They have a whole 5 awards given to those who play and create content for games to an everyday audience. Including content creator of the year, Esports team of the year, and the best professional player.
Game of the Year
But lets get to the most anticipated part of the game awards, the winner of the Game of the Year. This years award was given to Elden Ring, a game designed by From Software. This was a great choice as it’s been one of the most awaited for games ever since the release of the companies previous game. Not only did it live up to the hopes that players had for the game, in many ways it surpassed it. It was their only release since Dark Souls 3 came out in 2016, and the amount of effort and work paid off.
