For students seeking acceptance, Gulf Coast State College’s student run radio station The AlterNation, gives voice to those desires.
At a time where division has defined our nation it is important to maintain an environment in which there is a free flow of diverse ideas and diverse people to express them. This has long been associated with institutions of higher learning.
Gulf Coast State College makes this a priority as their statement on Equity makes clear. This is also reflected in the many clubs and departments at the school which strive to make sure every voice is heard.
Perhaps nowhere more than the place on campus where these voices are heard literally-The AlterNation. The diversity among DJs comes through in more than just the music they play, which is a mix of nearly everything, but also their worldviews, lifestyles, cultures and ideas.
The digital media department is a diverse and inclusive environment and is not so by design but rather happens organically and is nurtured by both faculty and students. I interviewed Professor Caleb Jordan who stated “The station’s goal is very much to be reflective of the student body. Musical tastes, opinions, experiences…” and that was something he and the station were “proud to nurture.”
This idea was also expressed by a student staff member and self-identified non-binary human, Rain Braddam, who said “inclusion and diversity is not something that’s actively done here it’s just something that exists.” This is a stark contrast to different companies or brands trying to force diversity and inclusion which come off as disingenuous. Rain stated they believe that this tactic is “more infuriating than people being overtly awful.”
In addition to being an inclusive and diverse environment, The AlterNation is also a fun environment that combines individuals’ passions, skills, experience and good music. For students who are interested in broadcast media such as radio, you can become DJs for The AlterNation as well as being part of this welcoming community regardless of your degree path.
