On March 24th, the Amelia Center Gallery on the Gulf Coast State College campus opened up its doors to the residents of Panama City to visit art by a local group. The group is best known as the Body Narrative Collective, consisting of Pavel Amromin, Jill Foote-Hutton, Magda Gluszek, Tammy Marinuzzi, Keith Smith, and Meghan Sullivan. Their featured show titled Same Old Story is filled with works that pertains to the current and past political, social, and economic issues that world is and has been facing.
The show includes many different works discussing complex issues of society, one piece of which was an interactive piece by Magda Gluszek. Body Narrative Collective as a group discusses the parallel of fairytales to modern-day fallacies. In this project by Gluszek, they challenge the phrase ‘The Sky Is Falling’ to relate small joys in one life. In their interactive piece, Gluszek invites the audience to write down something that brings them joy on a roll of paper, pick out an unfired piece of clay shaped as an acorn, then crack the acorn to reveal the artists’ small joy, then tape the joy onto the last roll of paper. The artist quotes in their directions about the project, “We can react like the chicken, stirring up those around us in a panicked frenzy. Or, we can pause, and use the moment to reflect on all of the other possibilities”.
The Same Old Story installation will open at the Amelia Center Gallery (AC 112) from March 24th to April 14th. The opening reception was Friday, March 24th 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., but the gallery will continue to be open on Monday through Thursdays from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and Fridays from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. As always, admission is free to view the show on campus.
