“Productivity is a measure of economic performance that compares the amount of goods and services produced (output) with the amount of inputs used to produce those goods and services.”

You just finished writing your 1102 English essay. It’s completed and ready to submit. The essay is the finished product; the time, effort, research, electricity, and tears are the raw resources that came together to create that product. How well you used those resources reflects how productive you were with them.
When people think about productivity, they typically measure it by their most valuable resource: time.
Time
We perceive life through the lens of time; our work, recreation, experiences- time is constantly flowing by us. Time is unique- though only because it’s not unique at all. Nobody has more or less time than the next person. “We all have the same 24 hours in a day” is a popular motivational-esque quote. The point is that we all have the same amount of time to spend – and thus the difference lies in how we spend it.
If the previously mentioned essay takes you 1 hour to write, then you would consider yourself more productive than your friend who spent 10 hours writing it- because you completed the same product in less amount of time. But you may not feel as productive as your other friend who wrote the essay in just 10 minutes. . .
Or would you?
Value
While it’s true that time is generally the obvious indicator of productivity, you cannot rely on it alone. In my opinion, there is another element that is just as important: value.
Take the 10-minute essay for instance. It was completed quickly, but what does that matter if it’s unintelligible ranting about nothing? Value (albeit subjective) is the overall quality and usefulness of the finished product.
The Result
Productivity then lies balanced on a graph between quality and time. One should aim to increase the quality of a product while decreasing the time spent working on it.
Essentially: write a 10-hour essay in only 60 minutes.
