Gulf Coast State College sponsors a program called “TRiO”. These are federal funding outreach programs for students who are the first in their family to go to college, disabled students, for students who come from an unfortunate upbringing, and for general aid with tutoring. The funds used will be put towards three programs run by TRiO, hence the name. These three programs are: Student Support Services, Upward Bound, and Educational Opportunity.  TRiO can be a bit confusing to navigate if going at it alone, especially online and not in person. This article and presentation’s purpose is to bring to light some potential benefits that could be found without the reader digging through websites.

Student Support Services (SSS) is a program constructed to assist disabled, first-generation, and low-income students. This program provides the following services: Tutoring, Academic Counseling, TRiO Scholarships, Career exploration, Entrance Exam Assistance, Educational Field Trips, College Tours, Assistance with University, Financial, and Scholarship admissions. Academic Success Plan & Advice on Course Selection, Assistance with FAFSA, and Transfer Assistance.

Upward Bound is an intervention program and exists to promote and prepare students for post-secondary education. That means students who struggle to graduate from high school but want to enroll in college. This program provides instruction facilities for both summer and regular school seasons. This program also provides: Financial Assistance, Career Exploration and Academic Advising. The eligibility prerequisites for this program require the student to have citizenship, describe their at home status, have a need for academic support, and be between the ages of 13-19.

Educational Opportunity is a program created to support and motivate students from any unfortunate upbringings. This program includes most of what was previously stated including: Tutoring, Financial Literacy and Financial Aid, Career & Academic Counseling, and Admission Applications. There are some light requirements to this program as well. Needing the student to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and/or genuinely wants to continue or enter a form of post-secondary education. Which includes Vocational Schools, Technical Schools, Universities, and Colleges.

The Educational Opportunity and the Upward Bound programs offer roughly the same benefits but there is one key difference in their requirements. The difference in age allows these programs to stack on top of another to allow any student who out grows the age requirement in Upward Bound continue into Educational Opportunity to continue with TRiO’s service.
