Over the weekend students living in the fsu dorms were notified of a water break. The notification came in various ways and no one seemed to be prepared or expecting such an event – it all went down like this. On Friday afternoon students living in the student housing were notified of a water break that will take awhile to resolve. Val, a junior at gulf coast majoring in art, had received the announcement via text message. “It threw me off routines and made things a lot more stressful , making tasks like cooking and doing dishes an inconvenience..” she’d mention she hadn’t been in the situation before so she wasn’t sure what was safe to do and what wasn’t. The text message had failed to suggest safety precautions during the time of the event. The message in question, “ residence we were just notified that we are on a precautionary boil notice per the city since the emergency main water break happened. We will let you know when the boil notice has been lifted.” another student , ladasha, a freshmen in the nursing program had not received any notification as of yet. She had stepped out for a moment and came home to no running water – when she asked her housemates about the issue they informed her about the message sent to everyone. “ The faucet had made a strange noise and I had asked my other housemates if they were dealing with the same issues , that’s when they told me about the email sent out to us.
I had to boil water and set it aside just to brush my teeth / wash my hands. It was a time consuming process and very annoying.” For the few students subscribed to newsletters from the dorm’s email they were sent a more detailed message over the issues . “Dear Residents,I hope this message finds you well. We are writing to inform you that a precautionary boil water advisory is in effect for our community due to a recent water main break. The safety and well-being of our residents are our top priority, and we are taking necessary precautions to address this issue promptly.During this time, we recommend that you boil all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes. Boiling the water for at least one minute will help ensure its safety for consumption. We will provide updates as soon as the boil water advisory is lifted. Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated as we work to restore normal water service.Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
The email had suggested students to boil their water before indulging , this information had failed to find its way in the text message that was sent previously and so as a result most students were left confused as to what was safe to do, eat, and indulge in. By Monday afternoon the water precautionary boil point was lifted . students had assumed the break came from all the construction happening in the area as of recently and they were right. “ one of the construction workers had hit a water line during digging and had advised us to warn our residence of the issue – the warning was sent out as a precaution since no one really knew if the water was contaminated for sure”, said a front desk worker.
In the end it was a short stressful weekend and that was the event I had to endure as well as my fell housemates at the dorms.
