The Digital media Program at Gulf Coast State college can lead to either an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree. It is one of the four programs at Gulf Coast to offer a Bachelors’s degree.

Two specializations are offered for this program. Digital Media / Multimedia Production and Digital Media/Multimedia Web Production.

Digital Media/Multimedia Production:

“The goal of this program is to prepare students for initial employment as a digital media/multimedia production technician, digital media/multimedia developer, or to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in these or related occupations.  Graduates of this certificate program could potentially obtain entry positions as graphic artist technician, animation/gaming/simulation technician, digital video production technician, or Web design technician. All courses in this program can be used in pursuit of the college’s Digital Media Associate of Science degree.”

Digital Media/Multimedia Web Design and Production :

“The goal of this program is to prepare you for initial employment as a web designer, web production assistant, web production artist, or to provide supplemental training if you are currently employed in the web design industry.  You will gain hands on experience in analysis of end-user needs, use of digital media/multimedia computer applications and the design and production of digital media/multimedia projects, including manipulation of video, animations, and audio.  All courses in this program can be used in pursuit of the college’s Associate of Science degree in Digital Media. “

To help you decide which of these two paths you should take in the digital media program, I talked with Associate Professor Dr. Erika Goines.

I asked what are the main differences between the two specializations?

“The digital production specialization focuses on audio and video production as well as the aspects of post-production like editing. The web development specialization is on front end website development from HTML/CSS to programing languages like JQuery and Web Analytics along with Interface Design and User Experience.”

I asked what kind of classes does the web specialization offer?

“The Web Development specialization offers classes in Introduction to Programming Logic, SQL Databases, JavaScript and Programming the Internet of Things”

I asked what kind of classes does the multimedia production specialization offer?

“ The Digital Production specialization offers classes in Editing, Radio Production, Studio Production, Electronic Journalism, Digital Storytelling and Lighting.”

Upon the completion of the digital media program, some of the jobs you can get are :

Most classed for the digital media program are offered in the Advanced Technology Center also known as the ATC. Which is equipped with high-end equipment to help further improve on the skills and time to complete assignments and learn how to develop useful skills for a real-world job.
