Who’s ready for some nostalgia and science? Millennials are all too familiar with the well-known TV personality and science educator, Bill Nye the Science Guy. I bet you twenty dollars that you were singing “Bill, Bill, Bill!” in your head after reading his name. Well if you haven’t heard already, Netflix has released a brand new Netflix Original starring our beloved scientist and he is back to save the world; with science! It has been more than 20 years since the original Bill Nye the Science Guy left TV programming and it is a nice surprise to see him return. There is no doubt he is catering to this generation and he has returned with good reason. The new and improved theme song was created and sung by Tyler the Creator, who has masterfully incorporated the chant that we all love to get stuck in our heads. The show also guest stars many high-profile celebrities to be his lab assistants such as people like Steve Aoki to Zach Braff. The TV series has 13 episodes that cover different topics that are relevant to our society today and each episode is 30 minutes in length. If you are not already familiar with Bill Nye, the series has a talk show type atmosphere and he invites a number of celebrities to discuss scientific topics that need to be addressed. He covers issues such as climate change, GMOs, vaccines, and much more.
First impression when I watched the first episode was excitement because I grew up watching Bill Nye the Science Guy with my sister and we both loved it. What better way to get people to pay attention (if they aren’t smart enough to already) then to use one of their childhood memories and revamp it to a bigger and better TV show! In the first episode, Bill indirectly calls out certain politicians on their misinformation about climate change and science in general. His biggest concern is to educate and enlighten the public on issues that need to be addressed and I believe that is the priority of the show. Coincidentally enough, the show aired a day before the March for Science, a protest in opposition to President Donald Trump’s threats of budget cuts to agencies funding scientists work. On the flip side, this show is very pleasant and fun to watch. Bill stages his typical demo experiment, sends his guest star on location to talk to someone about the episode’s issue, and at the end, he has a panel of professionals discussing the issue. Overall, it isn’t the same TV show it once was but it is definitely a nostalgia trip for millennials. If you like science and witty old men in science coats, I would highly recommend watching Bill Nye Saves The World!
